Outdoor Pavilion and Farmers Market Project

Community members have a unique opportunity to help shape the future of Decorah. We can offer a lasting gift to generations of the community by supporting the creation of a sustainable, artistically vibrant outdoor multi-use pavilion . This shared space will celebrate creativity—hosting local and touring musicians, dancers, theater groups, speakers, and community events. It will provide a long promised, enhanced home for the Farmers Market. It meets the long-term vision goals for this area developed by the City Council in 2018.

Why Now?

  • No Adequate Outdoor Performance Space currently exists
  • To enhance an under-utilized area, complimenting all the changes from the new school, Heivly road construction, and a future new fire station.
  • There is a large community of supporters wishing to support such an effort
  • Significant savings through Federal Credits are available if the project is completed before December 31, 2027.

The How:

Project Process:

  • A privately funded construction process with non-public revenue created to support long term maintenance and management.
  • Stakeholder involvement has been included.
  • Collaboration with City Council Sub-commitee.

Sustainability Goals:

  • Solar-powered pavilion (~44 kW) can provide free electricity for the Plaza and enhanced Farmers Market space.
  • Bi-facial solar panels make up a waterproof roof that floats above the pavilion structure on steel beams, providing an excellent acoustical shell for performances.
  • Cantilevered solar canopies will provide shade and weather proof protection for the Farmers Market.
  • Building construction materials chosen to last many generations
  • Theatrical lighting, sound and security systems will be incorporated.
